You don't need to prepare for everything. You just need to make sure the things you'll reach for are ready when you need them.
Emergency preparedness can sound like a project: stock the basement, build the perfect emergency kit, make a detailed plan.
It doesn't have to be.
Take five minutes today and check four simple things: your lights, your backup power, your connection plan, and where you keep it all.
That's it. Five minutes from now, you'll be more ready than you are right now.
01. Charge Your Lights
When the power goes out, most of us instinctively reach for a flashlight.
That works when you're trying to find the breaker. It's less helpful when you're trying to make dinner, check on the kids, move around the basement or spend several hours in a house without power.
A flashlight helps you find things. Overhead light helps you get things done.
Pull out the rechargeable lights you'd use during an outage and check their batteries. If they aren't fully charged, plug them in now.
Then ask yourself one important question:
Could everyone in the house find them in the dark?
If the answer is no, give them a permanent home.
A LightRanger works especially well for outage preparedness because it gives you portable overhead light instead of a beam pointed in one direction. Set it up where you need it, turn it on and get back to what you were doing.
5-minute check:
- ☐ Lights charged
- ☐ Easy to find
- ☐ Everyone knows where they are
02. Charge Your Backup Power
A power bank at 10% isn't much of a backup plan.
Check whatever portable power you keep around for outages and top it off. That includes the smaller power banks you use for phones as well as larger batteries you rely on for lights and other devices.
Think about the things you'd actually want to keep running:
Phones. Lights. Tablets. Communication devices. Your Starlink Mini.
You don't necessarily need enough backup power to run your entire house. Start with enough to keep the things that matter most to your family working.
If you use an AMPak Power Bank, charge it at the same time as your LightRanger so the two are ready together.
5-minute check:
- ☐ Backup power charged
- ☐ Charging cables nearby
- ☐ You know what your power bank can run
03. Know How You'll Stay Connected
When the power goes out, your home internet may go with it.
That might be a minor inconvenience during a short outage. During a longer one, connectivity can become much more useful for checking weather, communicating with family, getting updates or continuing to work.
So ask:
If my normal internet goes down, what's Plan B?
For households using Starlink Mini, portable power can provide another option. The AMPak 145 can connect directly to Starlink Mini and provide up to 7 hours of runtime, so your connection doesn't have to depend on a working wall outlet.
DEVOS's Stay Connected Bundle pairs portable power with portable overhead light, giving you two of the things you'll probably want first when the grid goes down: light and connection.
5-minute check:
- ☐ Know your backup connection plan
- ☐ Required devices are charged
- ☐ Cables and adapters are with them
04. Put It All in One Place
This might be the easiest, and most overlooked, part.
Don't make yourself go on a scavenger hunt when the house is dark.
Pick a place for the essentials:
- Portable lights
- Backup power
- Charging cables
- Flashlights and batteries
- First-aid supplies
- Weather radio, if you have one
- Other emergency essentials your household relies on
It doesn't need to be an elaborate emergency station. A shelf, tote, cabinet or gear bag works.
What matters is that everyone knows where it is.
If your LightRanger is in the garage, AMPak is in the basement and charging cable is buried in a kitchen drawer, you don't really have a system yet.
Put them together.
Done. You're More Ready Than You Were 5 Minutes Ago.
That's the point.
Emergency preparedness doesn't have to come from worrying about everything that could happen. It's simply about making the unexpected a little easier to deal with.
Every few months, take five minutes and run through the same list:
Charge the lights.
Charge the power.
Check your connection plan.
Put everything where you can find it.
If you're missing something, fix that while you're thinking about it.
Then get back to everything else.
Charge It Now. Be Glad You Did Later.
You can't control when the power goes out.
You can make sure you're not searching for a dead flashlight when it does.
DEVOS portable lighting, power and emergency kits are designed to make preparedness simple, from grab-and-go overhead light to portable power, solar charging and Starlink Mini connectivity.
